I’ve been starting some new routines lately because the voice in my head was getting a little bit too loud and wasn’t being very nice… new routines for me always give me an opportunity to reset the voice and have a little more control over it.

The thing is, voice in the head isn’t even you. It’s just thoughts. You are the watcher of the thoughts. You are also the watcher of your emotions. Thoughts come and thoughts go… feelings come and feelings go. Many people believe who they are is what they are thinking and how they are feeling. The truth is, thinking and feeling ARE part of the human experience, a HUGE part of it. The brain was meant to problem solve, but it wasn’t meant to obsess over things. We were meant to feel things because it gives us information. It’s a tool. And way too often we let our thoughts and feelings abuse us. The good news is, we have the power to use our thoughts and feelings as tools, but in order to do that, we must release identifying who we are with those thoughts. If you want to do this, you have to be willing and committed to questioning “who am I”.

Are you tired of the same old thoughts in your head? The same emotional reactions to those thoughts? See if you can practice a few times taking a step back and asking yourself who’s talking right now? Is this a thought or is this an emotion? Am I having a thought or is a thought having me?

At first, you may not be able to tell… but try to take notice that when a thought comes up, perhaps a negative thought, who’s talking?

I am scared – attaches who you are with the thought or emotion of fear

I am feeling scared – detaches yourself from the thought or the emotion of fear, and allows you to take a step back and notice that you are feeling scared… which then allows you to do something about it.

The first time you ever see yourself as the watcher, you will be absolutely amazed. You might even question – how long have I been identifying and living life through the eyes of my emotions and thoughts ONLY. Who would I be if I simply was a human who was experiencing these thoughts and emotions instead of identifying who I am with these thoughts and emotions?

I set up a free subscription to a spotify playlist that has a great seminar by Eckhart Tolle about presence, thoughts, emotions and beginning to separate yourself from them. Listen or subscribe to the free playlist I made, below.
