About this episode: A friend of mine shared a blog post on my facebook a few weeks ago that really pulled me in. It was titled, “This is a Dead Mom Essay,” written by Maddie Taterka, a freelance writer and contributing editor to Autostraddle, an intelligent, hilarious & provocative voice and a progressively feminist online community for a new generation of kickass lesbian, bisexual & otherwise inclined ladies (and their friends).

In this article, I learned that Maddie lost her mom to cancer when she was 16 and immediately connected with her story, as I’ve lost both my parents to cancer and losing my dad when I was 22 really flipped my world upside down. Also, being a queer woman adds a entirely different spin to loss (in my opinion). I was really interested to get to know Maddie and her story a little bit more, so when she said yes to being open to an interview, I was ecstatic!

About this show: I lost both parents to cancer at 22 and 27. Let’s talk about stuff that’s hard, ways you can move forward in your life and how to get back to a happier place. My intention is to connect those of us who have lost our mothers, our fathers or both parents, at any age, through the arts, life experiments, looking inward and turning pain into something positive.
